This is recent news, so my guess is but hypothesis. It’s good to not comment on things without a moment to reflect.

Two dimensional meaning: Pavel Durov has been arrested in France for not censoring Telegram (he knew he had a warrant out for his arrest in France, seems like a very random and ill-calibrated mistake).

Three dimensions: Pavel Durov faked arrest in France to avoid assassination from Putin for not installing a backdoor in Telegram.

Two dimensional meaning: North Korea invaded South Korea with the support of the Chinese.

Three dimensions: North Korea was goaded by the USSR, promising support but never delivering it, to invade South Korea to create a problem for the Chinese.

Two dimensions: Someone tells you bad things about another person, giving you useful advice.

Three dimensions: Someone who tells you bad things about another person assumes you are stupid and easily manipulated because you believed them rather than verifying yourself.

A real-life example

The purpose of this FT Article (The inside story of the secret backchannel between the US and China) is not to inform.

I think this take on it is the most accurate, despite it being from a well-known FT comment troll.

This was placed to signal to the Russians (and possibly Iranians) that the U.S. and China are aligned strategically. This places enormous psychological pressure on Russia. They’d think that something is going on “behind the scenes” via secret back channel. They’d rush to China to obtain additional assurances. And trust level will decline.

There’s a precedence for this type of 3D Chess through the news as the book “All the Worst Humans” indicates. They planted a story in a newspaper about how the World Cup in the USA was not a good idea due to the prevalence of obesity, somehow linking the initiative to Michelle Obama, causing the scales to be tilted toward Qatar.

Before the Sino-Soviet split, the White House was being briefed by the Soviets in advance of border skirmishes, which to them indicated that there were issues behind the scene, for this briefing could only be pretext by the Soviets for further incursions.
